Voor het eerst toont Sanne van Gent een grote serie collages samen. Wat zich ontvouwt is een rotsachtige fantasiewereld, opgebouwd met onderdelen uit eeuwenoude landschappen en monumenten. De collages variëren van grote, gedetailleerde voorstellingen tot kleinere, bijna abstracte werken die doen denken aan sculpturen en archeologische resten uit fictieve beschavingen. Natuurlijke elementen zoals stenen worden gecombineerd met door mensen gemaakte fragmenten zoals pilaren en sokkels, waardoor een hybride wereld ontstaat. Het werk beweegt zich voortdurend tussen herkenning en vervreemding — alsof het afkomstig is uit een werkelijkheid die net naast de onze bestaat.
“Wat mij interesseert is het nabootsen van oorspronkelijkheid, en dan met name in relatie tot het landschap en sporen van oude en nieuwe cultuur die daarin te vinden zijn. Wij mensen voelen vaak instinctief aan wat ‘echt’ is, maar worden ook aangetrokken tot het gemaakte, de uitvergroting van de werkelijkheid die soms meer in onze (visuele) behoefte voorziet dan de authentieke vorm. We laten sporen na in het landschap en kunnen iets wat door natuurkrachten ontstaan is een betekenis geven en die later ook weer veranderen. Ik wil beelden creëren die niet helemaal ‘echt’ zijn, en onderzoeken hoever ik in dat proces kan gaan. Tot waar reikt ons gevoel van een kloppende realiteit en waar en waarom eindigt dat?”
Naast werk op papier zijn er ook enkele sculpturen en een installatie te zien, gericht op participatie van de toeschouwer. In de gewelfde kelderruimte staat bijvoorbeeld een installatie opgesteld waarin stenen centraal staan en bezoekers worden uitgenodigd om zelf ook te spelen met een nagebootste werkelijkheid.

For the first time Sanne van Gent shows a large series of collages together. A rock-like fantasy world unfolds, built with parts from ancient landscapes and monuments. The collages vary from large and detailed depictions to smaller and almost abstract works that remind us of sculptures and archeological remnants from fictional civilizations. Natural elements such as rocks are combined with human-made fragments such as pillars and pedestals, making way for a hybrid world. The work moves between familiarity and strangeness, as if it belongs to a reality that exists right beside ours.
“What interests me is the mimicry of originality, mostly in relation to the landscape and the traces of old and new cultures that can be found within. We as humans often instinctively feel what is “real”, but are also attracted to the fabricated, the exaggeration of reality that sometimes provides more for our visual needs than the authentic form. We leave traces in the landscape and can give meaning to something that is created by natural forces, and also change that meaning afterwards. I want to create images that are not entirely “real”, and research how far I can go with that process. Where does our feeling of a true reality end?”
Next to the work on paper, there are several sculptures and an installation, aimed at participation of the public. In the arched basement there is an installation where stones are central and visitors are invited to play with a fabricated reality.
